Week 27 - Photographer Highlight: Diane Arbus

Diane Arbus is known for her captivating portraits wherein she aimed to normalize marginalized groups with the end goal of highlighting the importance of representation of all people. 

For this week, choose a subject which may be ‘othered’ and showcase what makes it special, beautiful unique, interesting, or any other positive adjective that comes to mind. If you are using human subjects, be sure that you are not exploiting the subject. Diane was extremely genuine in her interactions and capturing of the subjects, and we would like to stay true to that spirit.

C’est une photo de Marie, ma tante. Enfant je passais une partie de mes vacances d’été dans sa maison, une ferme dans Les Landes. On ne s’ennuyait pas avec les animaux de la ferme: poulets, cochons, vaches, lapins et canards. Du matin au soir elle était toujours occupée. Je me rappelle du petit déjeuner avec les tartines à la confiture de citrouille et le repas du soir, très tard, après avoir gavé les canards où elle me faisait une purée aux pommes de terre. Je ne connais pas grand chose de sa vie avant son mariage avec mon oncle qui, lui, parlait encore moins. Son fils, mon cousin, a pris les même mauvais plis que son père avec l’alcool.

Elle avait toujours un sourire pour moi.
